About

An institution coming into existence.

Hemingway University is a developing interdisciplinary educational and research institution, built around intellectual formation, disciplinary rigor, and serious inquiry.

Mission

Hemingway University exists to cultivate intellectual life: the judgment, independence, and capacity for sustained inquiry that serious education makes possible.

Its model centers on intellectual formation, disciplinary rigor, interdisciplinary inquiry, mentorship, research, creation, and the responsible use of educational technology.

Why Hemingway University exists

Much of education transmits information without forming the capacity to use it well. Hemingway University begins from the opposite commitment: education should develop judgment and intellectual character, and should treat inquiry and creation as central forms of learning.

It does not imitate an existing university before the institution exists at that scale. It is an effort to define, test, and gradually build a serious academic model.

Educational philosophy

Five principles guide the design of the institution.

  1. Intellectual Formation

Education should cultivate judgment, independence, intellectual character, and the capacity for sustained inquiry, rather than merely transmit information.

  2. Disciplinary Rigor

Interdisciplinary work should grow from real engagement with disciplines—their methods, histories, and standards—rather than bypassing them.

  3. Directed Independence

Learners should gain increasing control over their intellectual trajectories while remaining supported by mentors, curricular structures, and institutional expectations.

  4. Inquiry and Creation

Research, writing, software, design, art, experimentation, and other forms of production are central modes of learning, not optional end-stage activities.

  5. Knowledge in Relation

Knowledge should be approached as connected without collapsing important disciplinary distinctions. Mettica is being developed as the open knowledge and pedagogical substrate through which these relationships can be explored.

Institutional development

Hemingway University is currently in an early stage of institutional development. Present work focuses on institutional design, the academic model, integration with Mettica, and this public website.

Future structures such as schools, institutes, and programs appear on this site only with a clear status, so that what exists can always be told apart from what is planned.

Mettica

Mettica is foundational learning infrastructure for Hemingway University, while remaining an independent, open educational platform in its own right.

Current status and long-term ambition

Hemingway University is not accredited and does not currently grant degrees. It does not present any program, faculty, or student body as active.

Its long-term goal is to mature into a genuinely accredited university. The path toward that goal is set out on the roadmap.
