Academics

How education at Hemingway University is intended to work.

A proposed academic model: five stages of intellectual development, grounded in real disciplines and supported by mentorship.

Academic progression

The progression moves from essential tools toward independent work. It is presented as an emerging model, not as a finalized, credit-bearing framework.

The stages describe development through the institution. They are separate from Mettica’s depth levels, which describe how deeply a learner engages a subject.

Proposed model

This progression is provisional. It is presented as an emerging academic model, not as a credit-bearing degree framework.

  1. Foundation

Learners acquire the essential tools of serious study: reading closely, writing clearly, reasoning carefully, working with evidence and quantity, and understanding how disciplines make and test claims.

  2. Exploration

Learners encounter multiple fields of knowledge and practice, discovering the questions and disciplines that could sustain long-term work.

  3. Concentration

Learners pursue depth in a chosen discipline or a defined interdisciplinary area, working with its established methods, literature, and standards.

  4. Synthesis

Learners bring methods and knowledge from different fields together in advanced work, testing what each field can contribute to shared questions.

  5. Research / Creation

Learners undertake substantial independent research, experimentation, or creative production that contributes something of their own.

How the two scales differ

Disciplinary rigor and interdisciplinarity

Interdisciplinarity depends on real disciplines. Learners are meant to encounter established methods, histories, and standards before or alongside synthesis across fields.

Connections between fields are pursued deliberately, without collapsing the distinctions that make each field rigorous.

Mentorship and seminars

The model envisions learners working closely with mentors who guide their development, and seminars that provide structured, discussion-centered instruction.

  • Mentorship

Mentors who guide and support each learner’s intellectual development.

    Status: Long-term
  • Seminars / Courses

Structured instruction in small, discussion-centered settings.

    Status: Long-term

Schools and faculties

Over time, related disciplines are expected to find durable academic homes in schools or faculties. None exist today, and none will be announced before there is substantive academic work to support them.

  • Schools / Faculties

Durable academic homes for related disciplines.

    Status: Long-term

Programs and future qualifications

Hemingway University does not currently offer degrees or credit-bearing programs. Formal programs leading to recognized qualifications are a long-term aim, connected to the goal of accreditation.

  • Programs

Structured courses of study, eventually leading toward recognized qualifications.

    Status: Long-term
  • Formal programs and recognized qualifications

Structured programs that lead to qualifications recognized beyond the institution.

    Status: Long-term

Research and creation in the curriculum

Research and creative production are meant to run through every stage rather than wait for the last one. Early stages build the skills that make original work possible; later stages make that work the center of study.
