Mettica
Hemingway University and Mettica
Foundational learning infrastructure for the university, and an independent, open educational platform in its own right.
The relationship
Mettica is foundational learning infrastructure for Hemingway University, while remaining an independent and open educational platform in its own right. The two projects address different layers of education.
Mettica organizes knowledge and understanding. It provides structures for navigating disciplines, tracing relationships between concepts, approaching subjects at different levels of depth, and eventually engaging knowledge through multiple forms of representation—including text, visual models, simulations, narrative, sound, and interactive systems.
Hemingway University organizes intellectual life around that infrastructure. It adds the institutional dimensions that Mettica does not itself attempt to provide: academic pathways, mentorship, seminars, research, creative practice, scholarly community, assessment, institutional standards, and—over the long term—formal programs, qualifications, and accreditation.
The relationship is therefore neither ownership nor duplication. Mettica can serve learners entirely outside Hemingway University, while Hemingway University can draw upon resources and practices beyond Mettica. But Mettica is intended to become a major part of how Hemingway University represents knowledge, supports interdisciplinary movement, and allows learners to move between intuitive orientation and increasingly rigorous forms of understanding.
In this sense, Mettica provides part of the university’s epistemic and pedagogical infrastructure, while Hemingway University provides an institutional environment for formation, inquiry, research, creation, mentorship, and community.
As both projects develop, their integration may deepen. A future Hemingway University learner might use Mettica to investigate a concept across several disciplines, move through different pedagogical depths and representations, and discover related questions; then encounter those questions institutionally through seminars, mentorship, laboratory or studio work, independent research, collaborative projects, and formal academic programs.
Mettica organizes understanding.
Hemingway University organizes intellectual life.
Two different scales
Development through an institution, depth within a subject.
Hemingway University’s progression describes how a learner develops through the institution over time. Mettica’s depth levels describe how deeply a learner engages a particular concept or subject. A learner at any stage may work at any depth, so the two scales are kept separate.
